Sarlux was born in 1992 as a project company, owner of the IGCC Plant, to produce electric power (with a power generation capacity up to 575 MW), hydrogen and steam. The Plant, whose construction by Snamprogetti, General Electric and Nuovo Pignone as main contractors inside the Saras refinery started in 1997, achieved the first parallel with the national grid in December 1999. Furthermore, it is the most important commercial application of the IGCC technological concept worldwide. The project has required an investment of 1.050 million Euro, which have been financed, through a non-recourse project financing, by a pool of more than 50 international banks, among which the European Bank for Investments. Since 2006, Saras S.p.A. controls 100% of the Sarlux capital stock as a consequence of the acquisition of the 45% of the quotas, previously belonging to Enron Dutch Holdings B.V.
